Professional Boundaries

Welcome! I'm genuinely excited to work with you. Before we dive in, let's get clear on how we'll work together - because boundaries aren't about building walls, they're about creating a safe, effective space for your healing.

This document outlines what you can expect from me, and what I need from you to provide the best possible care. Think of it as our working agreement - no surprises, just clarity.

Communication Boundaries

How & When to Reach Me:

I want to be accessible without burning out (chronic illness, remember?). Here's how communication works:

Response Times:

  • Email: Within 48 hours during business days (Monday-Friday)

  • Urgent questions: Please mark as "urgent" in the subject line - I'll respond within 24 hours

  • Weekends & public holidays: I'm offline. Emails will be answered the next business day

Preferred Contact Methods:

  • Email: bek@persistentnutrition.com (best for detailed questions, sharing documents, or non-urgent matters)

  • Scheduled sessions: Video call, phone, or text-based (your choice - we'll discuss what works for your brain)

  • Between sessions: Email only, unless we've arranged otherwise

⚠️ Important: I don't offer 24/7 support or crisis intervention. If you're experiencing a medical or mental health emergency, please contact your GP, go to Emergency, or call a crisis line (details below).

Session Communication

During our scheduled sessions, you have my full attention. Between sessions:

  • Quick clarifying questions via email are totally fine

  • Longer discussions or new concerns should wait for our next session (or we can book an additional session)

  • If something urgent comes up, let me know - we'll figure it out together

Professional Boundaries

What I Can (and Can't) Do

I'm a qualified nutritionist with lived experience of chronic health conditions. Here's what that means in practice:

I CAN:

  • Provide evidence-based nutrition advice and strategies

  • Help you understand your body's nutritional needs

  • Support you in managing symptoms through nutrition

  • Advocate for you with your healthcare team (with your consent)

  • Provide education about food, supplements, and lifestyle factors

  • Help you navigate diet culture and develop body-neutral approaches

 I CANNOT:

  • Diagnose medical conditions

  • Prescribe medications or change your prescriptions

  • Provide mental health counseling or therapy

  • Offer emergency medical care

  • Replace your GP, specialist, or other healthcare providers

  • Guarantee specific health outcomes

Scope of Practice:

I work alongside your existing healthcare team, not instead of them. If I notice something that needs medical attention, I'll let you know and encourage you to follow up with your doctor.

I'm not a registered dietitian, so I don't work in clinical settings or provide Medical Nutrition Therapy for certain conditions that require dietetic intervention.

Evidence-Based Practice

My recommendations are based on:

  • Current scientific research

  • Your individual health history and needs

  • My professional training and experience

  • My lived experience with chronic health conditions

I won't recommend fad diets, "miracle cures," or anything that contradicts evidence-based practice. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Relationship Boundaries

Our Professional Relationship

I care deeply about your wellbeing, and I bring compassion, honesty, and my whole self to our work together. But there are important boundaries that keep our relationship professional and effective.

What Our Relationship Is:

  • Collaborative: We're a team working toward your health goals

  • Respectful: I respect your autonomy, choices, and lived experience

  • Boundaried: Professional, warm, and focused on your nutrition and health needs

  • Honest: I'll tell you the truth, even when it's not what you want to hear

What Our Relationship Isn't:

We're not friends, family, or social connections. This isn't about being cold or distant - it's about maintaining the professional space that allows me to provide you with the best care possible.

This means:

  • We won't connect on personal social media

  • We won't meet socially outside of sessions

  • Our communication stays focused on your health and nutrition

Mutual Respect

I will treat you with respect, compassion, and dignity. In return, I ask that you:

  • Communicate openly and honestly about your needs and concerns

  • Respect my time and boundaries (including cancellation policies)

  • Treat me with basic courtesy and respect

  • Let me know if something isn't working for you

If Things Aren't Working:

Sometimes, despite everyone's best efforts, a professional relationship just isn't the right fit. That's okay! If either of us feels that way, we'll have an honest conversation about it, and I'll help you find another practitioner who might be a better match.

Confidentiality & Privacy

Everything you share with me is confidential and protected under Australian privacy law. I will only share your information:

  • With your explicit written consent (e.g., to communicate with your GP or specialist)

  • If required by law (e.g., court order)

  • If there's a serious and imminent threat to your life or safety, or someone else's

For more details, see our Privacy Policy.

If you're experiencing a medical or mental health crisis, do not email me. Please contact:

My Commitment to You

Within these boundaries, here's what I promise:

  • I'll show up fully present and prepared for our sessions

  • I'll provide evidence-based, compassionate, no-BS nutrition support

  • I'll respect your autonomy and never shame or judge you

  • I'll communicate clearly and honestly

  • I'll advocate for you with your healthcare team (with your consent)

  • I'll continue learning and growing in my practice

  • I'll tell you if something is outside my scope or expertise

These boundaries exist so I can give you my best work - sustainable, effective, and grounded in both science and compassion.

Questions or Concerns?

If anything in this document is unclear, or if you have questions about our working relationship, please ask! I'd much rather clarify upfront than have confusion later.
